Sail Mhor View Cottage, Durnamuck

Sail Mhor View takes its name from the Corbett it overlooks, called Sail Mhor, also known locally as The Plum Pudding, for obvious reasons!

Sail Mhor View was built as a B&B in 1988 by a local crofter, who ran it until 1999. From 1999 onwards, the cottage has always been used as a holiday let.  We (Nicola and John), purchased Sail Mhor View in December 2018, a year after our epic move to Scotland, from Oxfordshire, when we moved to Durnamuck, to the neighbouring property.

Since then, we have completely refurbished, and re-decorated the whole cottage, modernising it to a high standard, to provide a comfortable home from home all year round, for guests with lots of dogs!

We only take direct bookings

Since 2020 we have been independently managing our bookings at Sail Mhor View, to ensure the best standards for our guests, both hooman and canine. Known as ‘The Proper Dog Friendly Place’, we do not do online booking, preferring the personal touch, which enables you to ask as many questions as you need to, and ensure that we have everything you require for a Proper Dog Friendly holiday here in the Highlands.

We are contactable from the initial enquiry, and throughout the whole holiday process, from start to finish, so if you think of something you’ve forgotten to ask, you can always get in touch with us. During your stay, you won’t see us unless you need, or want to – in which case we are on hand, as our house is down the driveway next door. Neither property is overlooked, as Sail Mhor View is above us, with it’s own private, enclosed garden and access.

Sail Mhor View - a stunning location

Sail Mhor View is located in the tiny coastal township of Durnamuck, in Wester Ross, with spectacular views over Little Loch Broom, sister loch to Loch Broom, on the other side of Beinn Ghobhlach, and the Scoraig peninsula. Situated between the equally tiny Badcaul, and Badluarach, Durnamuck is almost equidistant between the larger villages of Ullapool (32 miles), and Gairloch (26 miles).

The views over the loch are fantastic – see spectacular sunsets that make the mountains glow, and incredible light shows as the sun creeps above the horizon in the morning. Also known as The Loch of Rainbows, for the incredible displays of colour, after the rain. Sail Mhor View sits in a prime position, overlooking this fantastic scenery for you to enjoy from inside and out.

Little Loch Broom is a sea loch, opening out into The Minch, and is home to an amazing array of sea life, including seals, otters, and even occasionally, dolphins. But don’t worry, there are no Great White sharks lurking in the depths, so it’s ok for you all to go for a paddle!

There are seabirds aplenty, including cormorants and oystercatchers, and both sea eagles and golden eagles are sometimes spotted.  The loch has even had it’s own Seaweed Festival!

Inside Sail Mhor View

Sail Mhor View is a detached, three bedroom cottage, all on one level, with plenty of space for a relaxing, dog friendly holiday.

The master bedroom has an en-suite with a toilet, shower, and basin.

In January 2024, we converted the rarely used 4th bedroom, into The Dog Den.

There is a main bathroom, with toilet, bath, separate shower, and basin, plus a cloakroom, with toilet and basin, so there are plenty of facilities for everyone. All have heated towel rails.

The kitchen is fully equipped for hoomans and caters for the dogs as well, with our Doggy Diner area being the centrepiece for your canine pals.

The hoomans that come to Sail Mhor View get a separate dining room to sit and spend time in. As well as for eating and drinking, our large dining table is perfect for crafts, or playing games, of which we have a good selection, including the old favourites of scrabble, chess, and cards.

The beautiful living room is both cosy and spacious, with the most incredible views of Little Loch Broom and the surrounding landscape. With an electric stove as well as radiators, you won’t be cold, even in the depths of winter!

Whatever time of year you come, watching the sunrises and sunsets, and the many different weather types roll up the loch, is fantastic. With our dark skies, you will be mesmerised by the stars on a clear night, and who knows, you may even be lucky enough to catch the Northern Lights!
