Around Durnamuck and the Local Area

Wester Ross is amazing! There are just so many fantastic places around Durnamuck and our local area, that it would be impossible to list all of the ones worth going to, to eat out at, to visit, and to enjoy, during your stay at Sail Mhor View! So here is a selection of the best, and our own favourites. Many, many places here are dog friendly inside for well behaved dogs, and we’ve marked those that are. Please be responsible if you are visiting with multiple dogs – we highly recommend checking with individual establishments as to numbers of dogs, and exactly where they’re welcome. Please note that although many places open year round, some are only open seasonally, and may close between October and April – please check before travelling.

Shop Local! Help support other small, local businesses during your stay

Whilst many guests make use of the supermarket home delivery service available for their main shopping upon arrival, we advocate shopping local as much as possible during your stay. All the places mentioned below are used and highly recommended by ourselves. Not only are you getting quality goods, you’ll be supporting some other local small businesses at the same time!

The Egg Shack

Things to see and do

A brief, but steep walk up the ‘Allt Airdeasaidh’, to view the beautiful Ardessie Fall, situated on the side of the mountain below An Teallach, and Sail Mhor. The path can be wet, but it’s well worth the climb to see the view over Little Loch Broom. Less than a 10 minute drive from Durnamuck.

Brave the suspension bridge to see the Falls of Measach plummeting into an amazing gorge, as River Droma rushes through the canyon.

There are also some walking trails through the woodland for stunning views, and within a half hour drive from Durnamuck.

As of 2022, a brand new visitor centre is currently being built.

Laide and Aultbea Community Wood is a 214 acre wood, with three main trails, two inland lochans, and a bird hide. Purchased by the community in 2003, the wood is maintained by a team of volunteers. Absolutely stunning at all times of year. Durnamuck to Laide Wood is just a 20 minute drive.

Laide Wood

Cove is a very remote hamlet, about 8 miles northwest of Poolewe. It played at important part in WW2, and you can see gun emplacements and observation posts still there today. There is also a war memorial, to those lost in the Arctic Convoys. The just under 50 minute drive from Durnamuck will take you along some beautiful coastline, but be prepared for single track road and lots of passing places.

The weekly Poolewe market is held every Tuesday, from the end of March to the end of October, from 10am until 2:30pm.  There are also Christmas market weekends, for picking up some unusual gifts.

The market is held at Poolewe Village Hall, which is about a 30 minute drive from Durnamuck.

The market is a showcase of local crafts, produce, and more, and the stalls change regularly, so it’s never quite the same each week!

Poolewe Tuesday Market

Inverewe Garden is a botanical garden near to Poolewe, housing exotic plants from all over the world, which thrive due to the Gulf Stream. Loch Maree is said to be one of the most beautiful in Scotland. Famous for its stunning scenery, and wooded islands, it sits between the impressive mountain, Slioch, and the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve, also worth a visit.

Just over an hour’s drive from Durnamuck.

Gairloch is a beautiful village, with a variety of shops, eating places, a local radio station (Two Lochs Radio), sports and leisure facilities. Whale watching boat trips are available, where you will likely see pods of dolphins, porpoise, and maybe something even bigger! Early in the season, in April and May, you can take a trip out to The Shiant Islands, and see the puffins. Or take a more sedate trip on Alice, the glass-bottomed boat, and marvel at the sea life living beneath us.

Gairloch also boasts The Gale Centre, which is open 7 days a week, and hosts a community cafe, gift shop, and tourist information services. The cafe provides a lovely selection of paninis, soups, cakes, teas, coffees, and more, and there’s always a warm welcome from the friendly staff.

Gairloch is about a three quarters of an hour drive away from Durnamuck.

Ullapool is a larger village than Gairloch, with shops, eateries, and a busy harbour, where the ferry docks daily, on its trips to and from Stornaway, on The Isle of Harris. Boat trips around The Summer Isles are available, during which there are regular sightings of dolphins, porpoises and sea eagles.

Shearwater Crusies

Ullapool is famous for it’s annual Christmas Tree, made entirely from fishing creels.

About a 45 minute drive away from Durnamuck, or a bit longer if you stop for photos along the way!

We are incredibly lucky to have many beautiful, sandy beaches within the area, and there are no dog restrictions at any time of year. The closest to Sail Mhor View, is Mungasdale, which is just a 10 minute drive away. We also have Gruinard Bay, Boom Beach at Mellon Charles, and Mellon Udrigle, all within a 30 minute drive.

  • Mungasdale has very red sand and a fantastic view of Gruinard Island. Cows sometimes graze the seaweed on the beach, and there are sometimes sheep in the dunes, so do check before letting dogs off lead.
  • Gruinard is actually five bays when the tide is out, and it’s possible to walk between them, although be prepared to paddle in places!
  • Boom Beach has a lot of history with WW2, and the remains of the boom defence depot are still there, as is part of the jetty, which is now home to colonies of seabirds.
  • Mellon Udrigle is like a touch of the Carribbean in the Highlands! With turquoise water, and white sand, it’s stunningly beautiful.

A little further away, are Firemore and Redpoint.

  • Firemore is a large expanse of red sand and incredible scenery.
  • Redpoint is remote, and has sand with a pinky red hue, backed with dunes and grassy banks. There’s a walk of a good few hundred metres from the carpark, but it’s definitely worth it. The beach has also featured in the 2014 film, ‘What We Did on Our Holiday, with Billy Connolly, David Tennant, and Rosamund Pike.

Further Afield

Ullapool has a good selection of cafes, pubs, and eateries, as well as a great collection of small, independent shops. The trip to Ullapool will take you across part of the A832, known as the Fain, part of Destitution Road. Herds of deer are often seen, and you’ll have spectacular views of the mountain range that you can see from Sail Mhor View, known as An Teallach.

Once in Ullapool, there are a number of good choices food wise.

The West Coast Deli offers great sandwiches and paninis, coffee, cakes and more. The Cult Cafe, just opposite, is a New Zealand inspired cafe with a fabulous menu and great reviews.

The Ceilidh Place is a Hotel, Bunkhouse, Café / Bar, Restaurant, Bookshop & Music Venue. Dog Friendly.

The Bothy is a small but perfectly formed coffee shop, in West Street. It sells hot and cold filled rolls, sandwiches, pastries, and bakes, and is a personal favourite. Dog Friendly

If you’re looking for something a bit special, then Kylesku Hotel at Kylesku, and both Peet’s and Delilah’s both at Lochinver, are most definitely worth a trip. They’re not ‘local’, but are well worth the drive from Wester Ross to Sutherland, where you’ll pass through incredible Highland scenery.

Another place to combine with a longer day sightseeing, is The Applecross Inn, situated on the remote Applecross peninsula. The Inn is always busy, and serves generous portions of great food, as well as having lovely views across the Inner Sound of Raasay, to the Isles of Raasay and Skye. And of course, to get there, you’ll have to brave Bealach na Ba, one of the UK’s toughest and longest, but most scenic, roads! The road is famous for its many hairpin bends, with gradients approaching 17% – oh, and it’s single track! Not to be missed!

Our Location

Whilst being so rural is undoubtedly one of the reasons Wester Ross is as beautiful and unspoilt as it is, being so remote does take some planning!

None of the eating places, or attractions mentioned above are within walking distance – you will need to drive! Of course, the drives will be through the most spectacular scenery, but many roads will be single track, with passing places. Depending on the time of day you are travelling, there may also be deer on the roads, sometimes sheep, and feral goats during the winter months.  And of course, you will no doubt want to stop along the way, to grab a photo or two, so always allow plenty of travelling time!

If you are planning to eat out, we’d always recommend phoning ahead and checking any booking requirements – and opening hours are prone to change at short notice in the Highlands, so check those too!
